Looking To Expand Your Home? Do You Choose A Sunroom Or Conservatory?

There’s been a huge rise in the number of Scottish householders choosing to extend their current home in preference to relocating elsewhere. The cost of moving is enough to put anyone off the idea, especially when you compare it to the much more affordable cost of fitting a conservatory or sunroom.

Some of you may be surprised to discover that conservatories and sunrooms are two separate types of home extension, not the same thing.

Conservatories vs Sunrooms

Admittedly, there are similarities between them in appearance, but they utilise contrasting roofing systems for starters – a conservatory typically has a glass or polycarbonate roof, while a sunroom usually comes with a solid tile or slate roof.

If space, or a lack of it, is your motivation for expanding your residence, a sunroom may be more suitable as it is a truly all-year round setting. Some also believe it offers more solidity and is a more natural looking extension than a conservatory. The presence of a solid roof prevents direct sunlight travelling in from above, so don’t be deceived by the ‘sunroom’ tag as most sunrooms receive less natural light than conservatories.

On the other hand, if you want a home add-on that takes stretches your property out into the garden and feels exceptionally light during the daytime, a conservatory will be more befitting as it contains a higher volume of glass. We should point out too that a conservatory will still be a comfortable place to spend your time at home throughout the year – the modern conservatory is less susceptible to offering a low standard of thermal insulation during out hottest and coldest seasons.
