3 Home Improvement Suggestions For Smaller Homes
Here’s a remarkable statistic for you. Over the last 40 years, the average size of a new-build property in the UK has shrunk by 20%.
If you live in a new-build that was constructed within this period, you will be familiar with this and maybe wishing you could think of ways to create more space, or at least make your house feel roomier.
Decluttering your house would be a good start, as would using inventive storage solutions in rooms. And there are other things you can do that will turn what is a compact home into something that’s suitably spacious.
Hang up mirrors
It’s a common trick used in smaller homes, and it’s spectacularly effective if you get hold of the right type of mirrors and hang them in the correct areas.
Some people mistakenly think that small mirrors grouped together will work best, but you’re actually better buying larger mirrors with small frame surrounds.
Where you can, place your mirrors near a window, and not too near another wall or ceiling’s edge, and ensure the centre of each mirror is at the eye-level of an average-sized person.
Change to a light colour scheme
It won’t help if certain rooms feel dark. Switch up their current colour scheme and change to something a bit lighter.
Brilliant white is one of the first colours you think of in this regard, but you could choose an off-white if you prefer a warmer finish that will also manage to successfully reflect natural light.
If you take to repainting your walls, you should also repaint trims, doors and the ceiling too – don’t leave them out.
Install bi-folds, French or patio doors
The addition of a bi-folding, French or patio door between your house and garden will give you the option of opening the building and uniting the two settings.
As a result of this, your internal living space will feel vast, both because of the opening and also that natural light that travels into the house.
They won’t need to be open to entice the sun indoors because of their lengthy glass panes, so you will always benefit from a beautifully bright and spacious space.
