Heritage Windows – Everything You Need To Know

A window design that is sold as a heritage window needs to imitate the styling of an authentic timber window, so it requires traditional craftsmanship and the following of historical guidelines so that its proportions are accurate.

This form of replacement window is a popular choice for listed properties and homes in conservation areas dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century.

They suit these types of applications because of their ability to maintain the character of buildings, and planners identify this and generally don’t put a block on them being installed into historic homes, whereas they often will with other systems.

Timeless but modern too

Heritage windows have the all-important charm of a traditional timber window and their finishes are authentic, featuring a wood effect to make them for all intents and purposes look like a wooden design.

No timber is used to construct the product though, just UPVC or aluminium, two materials that are more robust, more energy efficient and more secure.

They’re draught proofing, so you won’t feel cold air coming through them either, and their units can hold double or triple glazing, which makes them superb insulators.

Heritage window options

There isn’t one style of heritage window; there are several of them. One of them is the flush sash window, with the flush referring to how its sashes meet perfectly with the frame to create a flat finish.

You can also buy cottage windows, which can similarly be classed as heritage as they are reminiscent of Georgian windows, coming with Georgian bar detailing.

Georgian bars create an attractive grid pattern on the cottage window, which makes it look like the window is made up of little individual panes.

A sought-after product

We have experienced a large increase in enquiries for heritage windows and you can see across Scotland that many homes now have heritage-style designs integrated into them.

They figure in quaint little cottages, listed buildings, and a significant number of contemporary residences too as they’re a great way of giving newer homes a classic aesthetic.

Viewing our heritage windows online doesn’t tell the full story of them. They need to be seen in our Galashiels showroom to realise how authentic they are.
