Change The Way You Pay And Save On Energy
There have been numerous solutions offered to homeowners struggling to pay for their energy bills; the most obvious being to make more of an effort to consume less energy. This means turning all lights off at night, avoiding leaving appliances on standby etc. Switching energy supplier can also make a difference as can investing in new windows and doors.
But have you ever considered the way you pay for your bills? There are numerous available payment methods open to people, some of which will prove less costly than others. Here’s a list of them:
Cash or cheque
Upon receipt of your bill you can take it to the Post Office and hand over the relevant cash or cheque; traditionally the most common way to pay. It’s a useful way of paying for those who want to determine as and when any money leaves their account but some banks and building societies ask for a processing charge to do this.
Direct debit
Nowadays, paying by direct debit tends to be the cheapest way of settling any outstanding bills as it gives suppliers reassurance that bills will be paid on time. As an incentive, many suppliers offer a discount to those who opt for this payment method but you need to be absolutely certain that you will always have enough funds in your account on the relevant due date. Any failed payments could lead to you being fined by both your bank and supplier.
Online billing
Ditching paper billing isn’t just good for the environment; it’s also good for your bank balance. Most online tariffs require you to settle your bills in this way. It also enables you to improve the accuracy of the bill you receive each month or quarter as you can regularly input any meter readings so that you don’t get overcharged.
Prepayment meter
Though it allows you to pay-as-you-go, paying via a prepayment meter is widely considered to be the most expensive way of settling your energy bills as it isn’t subject to any form of discount. It isn’t recommended to those worried about whether they will be able to afford their bills.
