Unravelling 8 Different Types Of Windows

Whether you’re a relatively new homeowner or you’ve owned a house for several years, you may not yet have had to buy replacement windows.

If the time has come to do it now, Mitchell Glass has you covered, with an abundance of styles waiting to succeed your existing designs.

We can also fill you in on the specifics of several types of windows to help you find window replacements that effortlessly fuse into your house and complement your taste.

Casement, Sash & Tilt and Turn Windows

Casement – A side hinged design opened outwardly with a handle. Maximises views thanks to no central mullion. Helpful for ventilation and suits contemporary and traditional abodes. Tight sealing and excellent glazing leads to great energy efficiency.

Sash – Contains sliding vertical or horizontal panels. Synonymous with Victorian/Georgian homes. Supremely stylish, involving minimal upkeep. Adequate glazing heralds medium to high thermal efficiency.

Tilt and Turn – Open inward with a slight tilt at the top or fully swing inwards. Entices airflow, simplifies cleaning and upholds safety. Employed in lots of modern dwellings. Strong sealing makes it a superb insulator.

Sliding, Bay & Bow Windows

Sliding – Functions with horizontal gliding sashes, useful where there is a dearth of space. Harness the opening for gentle air and light flow. Accomplishes moderate energy efficiency if sufficiently glazed.

Bay – Combines three glazed sections (one central pane flanked by two angled panes) and outwardly projects. Drives in light and adds space indoors. Perfect for period residences, it is imperative that it uses energy-efficient glazing because of the large surface area.

Bow – Similar to the bay window, but has greater curvature and 4-6 matching panels. Supplies a beautifully panoramic view and complements modern and Victorian houses. Offers medium levels of insulation.

Rooflight/Skylight & Flush Windows

Rooflight/Skylight – Incorporated into roofs to overcome light-depleted lofts and extensions. Will either be fixed or vented. Insulates extremely well if double or triple glazed.

Flush – Identifiable for their completely flat exterior, initiating a sleek look. Often harnessed at contemporary and period properties. Typically UPVC or aluminium-crafted and very low maintenance.
